There has been a long line of players from the Netherlands who have made their mark in English football.

Arnold Muhren and Frans Thijssen paved the way for a Dutch invasion after joining Ipswich Town in the late 1970s, and since then the likes of Ruud van Nistelrooy, Arjen Robben and Jaap Stam have enjoyed huge success in the Premier League.

We take a look at five players from the Netherlands who are aiming to follow in the footsteps of their compatriots following their moves to England this summer.

Davy Klaassen – Everton

With 50 goals and 33 assists in 162 appearances for Ajax, Klaassen attracted plenty of interest from around Europe before agreeing his £23.6 million switch to Goodison Park.

He is a technically-gifted attacking midfielder, but doesn’t shy away from hard work and should settle quickly into the Premier League.

Klaassen has featured heavily for Everton at the start of this season, helping the club to their best start since the 1978/79 campaign.

Wesley Hoedt – Southampton

With the uncertainty surrounding Virgil van Dijk’s future on the south coast, Hoedt’s £15m signing looks an astute move by Southampton.

The defender progressed through the youth system at AZ Alkmaar and soon caught the eye of first-team manager Dick Advocaat.

He quickly established himself at senior level, before sealing a move to Lazio in 2015. Hoedt has impressed in Serie A and his performances were rewarded with his first ever senior call-up to the Netherlands squad at the end of March 2017.

It’s difficult to see why Lazio have let Hoedt go, but Southampton won’t be complaining.

Bruno Martins Indi – Stoke City

Martins Indi began his career with Feyenoord, before moving to Portugal in 2014 to join Porto.

He was impressive during a loan spell with Stoke last season, and manager Mark Hughes eventually secured a permanent deal for the defender this summer.

The 25-year-old is a permanent fixture in the Netherlands squad and his style of play looks ideally suited to the Premier League.

Jairo Riedewald – Crystal Palace

The 20-year-old’s move to Palace from Ajax was something of a surprise, but the defender should blossom under Dutch legend Frank de Boer.

Riedewald made his debut for Ajax in 2013 and went on to make 93 appearances for the club in all competitions.

de Boer oversaw Riedewald’s progression through the Ajax ranks to the first team and the versatile defender has all the tools to be a success in England.

Riedewald already has three senior caps for the Netherlands since making his debut in September 2015.

Davy Propper – Brighton & Hove Albion

Brighton broke their transfer record with the signing of Propper from PSV Eindhoven.

The 25-year-old began his career at Dutch Eredivisie side Vitesse Arnhem before joining PSV in 2015. He has made more than 250 senior appearances, scoring 43 goals.

Propper is a strong competitor with Champions League experience under his belt, and he is likely to be a key player as Brighton bid to avoid a quick return to the Championship.
